All done but stumped by the explanations behind two clues.

Mysterious king facing defeat after year (6).

The answer is ARCANE

No idea how this one works.

Heart gets broken when embracing aged mistress (7)

Answer in HETAERA

The “broken heart” bit is obvious but I can’t explain the extra E & A

Can anyone shed some light?

Hi Tim,
a (anno): year & ae (aetatis): aged: Latin and both in Chambers.
a (year) + R (king) + cane (defeat)
ae (aged) in heart*

Cheers. Once again I’ve been caught out by not searching Chambers properly. I should have looked up “ae.” , not “ae”.
