Near road -was going around after being almost closed (7)

I can’t quite parse this and would be grateful for any help

The answer is TOWARD which is Near.

The end of this is pretty straightforward

Was around road gives you WARD

But how does being almost closed give you TO?..

Looks like (road w)* after T

So why would you get the W and S from was and not the A?

Please Note: The answer is TOWARDS with the S
