Have solved the grid and found all the items except “home”. Any hints as to its whereabouts, especially the start cell, would be welcome

I think I know what you mean by 'home', Joycie - and if I'm right, it's not what you should be looking for (think of a much smaller, more remote place - it's not even considered to be on a par with the others).

...If you're working from J.N.'s version there are two extras - it's the other one.

The thing you are looking for is at the top right it needs to be treated by the nine letter word in the down clues misprints.
