I'm fairly new to crosswords, so sorry if this is dreadfully obvious to the old hands.

I did a crossword with the clue "Yam" and the answer was "Tale". That's weird I thought so I checked with with a couple of online solvers, and sure enough Tale was given as one of the top answers for Yam.

I then checked several dictionaries for Tale and Yam and nowhere did I find a connection for these words. Then I checked the database on this site, again, nothing at all.

What am I missing here???

YARN, I think, not YAM...

Yam or YARN

How interesting! It certainly looks like Yam, but when I look at it with a magnifying glass, it is an artifact of the way the font was rendered by the printer, and it is indeed Yarn.

Evidently, this must be a common problem, as in the crossword solvers, the entry is for Yam, not Yarn, yet Tale is in the answers:

crossword-solver.io/ clue/ yam./
