I'm guessing that this was an easier solve than usual as I have a completed grid apart from. Makes up for last week when I had a general failure.
5D Palm tree with tonic bark is pollarded (3) I have ??A possibly C?A
21D Poet's moving pen to sound loudly and clearly (7) I have S?YRING so is that a P in there?
As to the endgame .. haven't got anywhere yet with this at all as I can't see any significance to 9 answers. Could I have a nudge please and then I can finish on a Saturday for once ready for AZED tomorrow. Thanks

aslac,

Re the end-game it's commemorating a famous event 'spanning' the past 80 years

Thanks for the nudge Muraria and I can straightaway see a spanner ! That also explained an odd clue answer at the same time. Google confirms the years .. Ok now I should have a chance.

You're welcome, aslac.

I've found that if all else fails and nothing sticks out in the grid, look for anniversaries!

Enjoyed this, quite an easy grid fill but a satisfying endgame which made sense of all of the rather odd entries.

Got through this without too many issues. I have the highlights and assume it's the poor abandoned thing that disappears. However, I can't quite see how what's left depicts the aftermath. Should I have deleted the nickname of the subject rather than the victim?
Thanks!

I think it shows the aftermath because of where the shattered subject ends up in the grid.

Thanks Nelson, so you think I'm right in deleting the poor victim? ie 'made to disappear'.

Yep Granama and you will note it leaves real words behind.

Cheers CandleDave! I still have a bit of a niggle with the depiction but will wait and see if anyone else thinks a major component is rather high up.
