Islander giving way to woman on Saturday? (3,6)

The answer is Man Friday. I get the islander bit but what about "giving way to woman on Saturday"? The Big Dave website explains it as "This islander was a companion to Robinson Crusoe", which doesn't explain the word play. Someone else explains it as "Woman on Saturday but man on Friday!" Eh?

I just know one of you out there will explain it.

I think the second explanation is the most likely one. What's the provenance of the clue?

It's from the Toughie crossword in yesterday's Daily Telegraph, loge. There's nothing else I can say about it. There's no theme; it's just a normal cryptic clue.

Just looked it up and it seems to be a normal DT puzzle?

Looks like a cryptic clue along the lines of "Indian city having misfortune then but......" for LUCKNOW.

Sorry, loge, it was the normal cryptic from yesterday. But I still don't understand it!

The idea seems to be just that if Friday is for men, then Saturday is for women. It's not very good, and I wonder who Sunday is for?

All I can think of is I know in some areas it is traditional for men on Friday nights to leave their wives at home and have a lads' night out at the pub. So maybe Saturday night is a girls' night out.

Thanks, loge, for the help and attention you've given to this.
