I've finished this, but I don't understand some of the parsing. Please can anyone explain the following?

16a: Two big beasts clash for the gold (7). The answer looks like BULLION (= gold). But if the two big beasts are BULL and LION, what's happened to the third L?

33d: Favourite son athlete watched over (4-4,3). I think it must be BLUE-EYED BOY (= favourite son). BLUE is athlete, EYED is watched, but what does BOY have to do with "over"?

43d: Looking sadly on ostensibly good drawing (7). The letters I have are P - T - I - G. It looks like PITYING (= looking sadly on), but I can't see why.

All help gratefully received please!

Much more fun than last week's horror, with some nice word play (eg 21a Majority of ship separating two creatures, 5,5) and only a couple of obscurities – 'kidney vetch' and 'double stopping' . Like the OP I couldn't parse 43d or 33d – any suggestions on the latter?
Another I can't parse is 23a Source of energy, damning river flow
Answer: stream, I think.
Source of energy is 'e', but what's stram?

I too have finished, but with one I can't quite parse:

55A Encouragement to start fires. (4,2)

_ E _ T _ O

I'm thinking it must be LETS GO (though I suppose it could also be SETS TO). Could someone please explain?
