Hi roof
The opera is by Bellini - his only famous one, as far as I know! The rest helps define the questionable letter in the latter half.
2d the sport is golf. Apart from 4 letters it's an anagram.

Hi Roof,

It's what every golfer dreams of getting (although I'm happy just to keep it on the fairway) and, by tradition, you have to buy the whole club a round of drinks if you get one of these.

Hi Brendan
Try holing out on par 3s, no fairway needed. Sorry, couldn't resist. Golf banned now I hear. Boo!

Despite 40 years of playing golf, I've only ever seen three - all by my opponent, and each time I was giving him a shot on the hole, so even if I followed him in I would still have lost the hole!

Ouch Chris! - When I was younger, during the school holidays, we used to play over the pitch and putt and I didn't even get one then!

I was walking across a Scottish golf course a few years ago and heard a golfer exclaiming "Oh no, don't go in the hole!".

Many thanks to Chris and Brendan

I'm so glad I was able to let you reminisce about your golf experiences. I've never played golf, but was pleased to get the answer from your hints. The hardest part was getting the synonym for perfect.

I got 11ac quickly from your hint Chris. Fortunately, my husband is an opera buff.

I have been struggling with this crossword. I can only find one answer that fits the crossers I have for 4d and can't see how it parses. I definitely can't see 4ac despite the hints. Ah, I've just had a penny drop moment, which means my answer for 4d is wrong. But I've just got that too.

Just 6ac and 8d and 14d to do. I don't like Picaroon. I can't identify many of the theme words

Just knocked off the last three, so I can go to bed in peace now.

Many thanks for all your help. I look forward to Paul next week. I might find him hard, but I am at least on his wavelength!

Yes Jono, I was also amused by more mooning, and this week both cheeks!! Incidentally, it was a full moon yesterday too, the second in October making it a blue moon. I thought that fitted quite nicely with the astronomical theme of the puzzle too.
