How important is it to use the 'recommended' edition of Chambers?
My copy is from 1999. (I can't justify buying every new release!) but in today's Azed 2,524 there's a word mine doesn't have -
— 7dn, Part in indecorous entertainment was unwonted.
All four crossing lights lead me to belief eve the answer is "usent", which isn't in my Chambers.

What edition do others use?

onelook.com is a source that references dozens of online dictionaries including Collins, which has most of the words in chambers ( including usen’t). Much cheaper than a new Chambers!

Hi Eviltony, I have the same, which I took to be "usen't". It's in my 13th ed. under use, but doesn't have a specific link to "unwonted". I'm thinking of taking out an online subscription as well.

Hi Guys,

I have the phone app version which is quite brilliant (it has "usen't). It also has word search facilities if you only have some of the letters as well as an anagram solver - I got both the dictionary and thesaurus on Google Play for under £10.

Hi Brendan, is that a one-off price, or p.a.? They don't seem to have it available for a PC. I thought it may be easier than lugging the book across every time I look something up.
I agree with Buddy about Onelook. I've often found words in there which didn't show up in other searches.

Hi Mattrom,

It's a one-off price and I honestly can't praise it highly enough.

....but as you say, you can't run the apps on a PC, I think your device has to be running Android or the Apple equivalent.

PPS - There is something called Bluestacks which is an "Android emulator" and apparently allows you to download and use apps from Google play - but I haven't tried it.

Hi Mattron and others. I bought the Chambers app for both my iPad and iPhone. There is a deal for both dictionary and thesaurus. I use them all the time and the initial word in question is in there. No, it is not a pc app.
