So, for cricket fans, what does stealing a base actually mean?

A stolen base is when a runner "advances to a base to which he is not entitled," i.e. not as a result of the batter getting a hit - the runner usually takes off as the ball is being pitches and tries to get to the next base before getting tagged out.
