I have struggled to a full grid, having spent all of yesterday afternoon on the brute. I too was held up at 9 across by assuming the conventional spelling at 6 down.

I have the message from the down clues but make no sense of that from the across. I hope that I don't cause offence by showing my hand but it's now three days in - I have SPANRINDIDCO(C or S)E

Morning, kenhiggs. You've got the start of the message correctly. That's just two letters and I think it's been mentioned earlier in the thread.

After that, there's AN? IN DID CO?E ....

Your R was wrong and it's not C or S inside CO ?E.

Thanks, Malone.

I had totally overlooked the D in "housed" and had TER(R) as terrace. Must stop getting my reading specs from Home Bargains!

As for 41, I had cess or sess for duty, and still can't see where my M is coming from (if it is indeed an M)

Cheers

Thanks, ken. For 41, the M in 'him' goes....

Thanks, ken. I thought that's what you must have done. Glad it's sorted.
