There is a note below the grid saying that "this month we are publishing some Enigmatic Variations puzzles that are at the easier end of the EV spectrum" and this one certainly is. That said, it was great fun and brought back some good memories.

As usual there is one clue I can't fully parse...

I have the answer which the wordplay leads to but with a "D" left over.

Red is a scots word meaning "vacated"
