Am I alone in finding the ST crossword slightly unpleasant of late? The clues often seem absurdly abstruse and when one solves them one doesn't get a sense of 'Oh yes, that's clever and satisfying' but rather a sort of grudging, 'Yes, I can just about see that. OK.'
For example:
1ac) Car accident in which Dan's changed course.
Ans. Bangers and Mash.

On the other hand, I suppose, we did have 2dn) Stated a word as a German might say it Ans. Averred - which is quite good and amusing.
And I'm stuck on:
Outline drawing of British dictator
Ans: DRAFT
- but why? Any help appreciated. Thanks

Never heard of ST sorry, but sounds like this may be a US puzzle? Also looks like a straight homophone to me.

The Sunday Times, Jafo. But if DRAFT is a homophone how does that fit the clue? Sorry for being dim!

I thought 1ac was fine. A banger is a car. Smash is a crash. And is an anagram od Dan (changed). And b and m is a course of a meal.
I think draft sounds like draught (as dictated)

Sorry Bella. I am too much of a cheapskate to subscribe to the ST.

Magpie is correct. Something about drinking beer maybe?

Thanks for the help guys. I think it must be that the music of the ST crossword just doesn't suit my ears. I can hear it and appreciate it to an extent but I don't really love it.

Bellakemp, I share your view of yesterday's puzzle. I got it all done - eventually - but enjoyed very little of it! I know some people don't like Dean Meyer's clues, but I can manage his puzzles more readily than yesterday's offering. One woman's meat is another woman's ....
