Can anyone parse the following for me please?

I've got AMPERSAND but cannot fathom it.

...just a sign of unity, two names, companies.

Zinc, I think it's just one of those where the whole clue is the answer, no breaking down of any wordplay. I don't think much of it, I prefer clues where we have to tease out the solution!

Sounds a bit like "hike up", "ike up" to a Cockney.
