Someone else asked about a particular clue earlier, and I don't think anyone answered that query, so, as I was also puzzled by it, I'll bring it up again. 18 Across - "Old statesman rarely any take to at first". The answer is (Jomo) KENYATTA, and I'm wondering how "KENY" relates to the "rarely" part of the clue.

Rarely = Exceptionally, Unusually, Remarkably ETC
