Can someone please explain the parsing of 20 Ac

Strip of land, double the amount you can dig up? (4)

I'm pretty sure the answer is SPIT and can see that this fits with both the 'strip of land' and 'double' (as in spitting image). But where does 'the amount you can dig up' come into it?

A spadeful is called a spit.

To be more precise, a spade depth.
