Well crafted PaulH! Thanks to kt17 for the vote and PaulH for recognition of the bridge reference, also spike2 for a mention. Thanks Tyke, love Waterloo Sunset!

Thanks tyke - I think "cherry" was at the insistence of the BBC. I enjoyed the clips - we used to live in souf London, though the Kinks were in the north, I think.

Congrats PaulH - great contributions, but the winner wasn't my favourite of yours!

Thanks for the mention, spike.

Excellent clue Paul!
Cheers Tyke. FYI the Kinks used to play in the pub round the corner from me - the Clissold Arms on Fortis Green in East Finchley. Sadly it was way before my time!

[Further to my previous comment, we lived first in Camberwell Grove, then at the top of Denmark Hill. My wife's parents lived in Blackburn. We soon learnt to get in the taxi at Euston before giving our destination, to forestall the driver saying "I'm not going souf of the river, gov!"]

[as a student in the 80s I had similar experiences, that said I now live ‘souf of the river’ and it’s rather nice ;)]

@Jono - do you you ever come North? It’s very odd how nobody I know ever goes Sarf! Having said that, I’m considering a visit to Brockwell Lido this weekend if I can bring my little girl...

Well done PaulH, a certain amount of topicality to the clue 🙂

Many thanks for the votes, likes and kind comments.

Thanks for a challenging word and for hosting, Tyke.

An excellent prize for me as I avidly read the New Musical Express in the 1960s and liked the Kinks. Underrated certainly. In Ray Davies they had a musician with a glittering career ahead, culminating in his recent knighthood. His CV is most impressive for someone my dear parents would have regarded as a long-haired yob.
