OK got it - well spotted, Big Dave ...

I'll add TYOTG = TMAHM

The solution is they are the initials of the main title and alternate titles of the works of Gilbert & Sullivan, as follows:

I = TPATP
PI = CA
R = TWC
T = TGGO
TM = TTOT
TPOP = TSOD
P = BB
TG = TKOB
TYOTG = TMAHM

Iolanthe I = The Peer and the Peri TPAPT
Princess Ida PI = Castle Adamant CA
Ruddigore R = The Witch's Curse TWC
Thespis T = The Gods Grown Old TGGO
The Mikado TM = The Town of Titipu TTOT
The Pirates of Penzance TPOP = The Slave of Duty TSOD

Patience P = Bunthorne's Bride BB

The Gondoliers TG = The King of Barataria TKOB
The Yeoman of the Guard TYOTG = The Merryman and his Maid TMAHM

FGS why on earth do you folks persist in spoiling our quizzes by giving away answers that the rest of us have managed to solve. As was said earlier the quiz only arrived last Thursday and with three weeks still to go to the closing date, there is plenty of time for contestants to try and solve the question. If they can't and want the answers spoonfed, why on earth do they enter? Ok rant over

OK This should have had a "possible spoiler" warning like on TV when the football results are broadcast - along the lines of "if you don't want to see the solution - look away now".

Very, very few people will read this thread. And this is just 1 question from a very long and involved quiz.

Mark - spoiler or not, the answer will now be available to anyone who surfs the net and as "puzzled" has said, between you and the lazy person asking the question, another GBQ question has been ruined.

The whole point of the forum is to help those who ask for assistance solving word puzzles, chiefly though clearly not exclusively crosswords. Do people who tackle, for instance, the Times crossword complain if a few solutions can be found on the forum?

If you are searching the Internet to try and solve the questions in the quiz, or complete a crossword, then can you honestly claim to have solved it without assistance?

Looking up and finding answers on websites is no different to looking in books, going to your library, or wherever to research answers.

The HUGE difference is that by putting your answers on here, everyone and their Granny gets to know the answer thus spoiling the whole idea of a competition.

What is the point of giving your opponents the answers if you are trying to beat them?

Dumber than a bag of hammers!
