I am hoping that someone with a more erudite knowledge (malone perhaps) can help me to parse 44d. Small hawk dropped in to rip to small pieces. ( 9) The answer appears to be TESSELLAR - word which does not appear in the Shorter Oxford Dictionary. There has to be an answer, but I'm b******d if I can find it.

Hi Despard,

Why nowhere near as erudite as Malone, i think this is....

S(mall) + SELL (Hawk) in TEAR (to rip)

Definition is "small pieces" as in a mosaic.
