Thanks grunger! I noticed the odd lettering at the outset but didn't follow it through - even when I was checking them off at the end!

if you mean the unchecked letters, no it is not obvious and you dont need to do this but they represent examples re the 6 thematic groups. The last 2 letters and the previous 3 were the easiest ones for me.

Sorry, williamseal - I did (literally!) tick off the letters when I checked them and they're now illegible. That's the trouble with newspaper grids - no second chances! (but I know grunger/jigjag will be right - hopefully, one of them will put us straight.)

You're right, grunger - it's a great finish to a great puzzle - I'd love to know how great, of course (if you've got time on your hands).

Are we saying that the unchecked letters, as they are grouped in the preamble, are represented again in the questions eg..

RU is an "element"

NCIS is a "drama"

Only, apart from those two, I can't see any others - or is it something else?
