Cannot get this one ! Can anybody give an answer? Thank you kindly!

4 Scattered, like mackerel might be? (8)

I can only think skywards but I don't think it's right!

The only thing that fits is some usage around the root SCALE, which means scattered (under SKAIL in Chambers) and which of course a Mackerel has.

But what at 8 letters? I just don't see it! DESCALED doesn't work...

Or am I missing the bloomin' obvious?

I wondered about STARGAZY (one spelling of the pie), but apparently it's pilchards or sardines rather than mackerel.

I'm wondering where these puzzles come from as they don't appear in the Daily or Sunday Telegraph (unless I'm not looking carefully enough, but then they don't appear in the online Telegraph puzzles either).

For one thing, the clue is grammatically incorrect. It should be "as", not "like".

Lecrack, did you have the P and D all along - or just from when you were given the answer earlier this morning? If the latter, it would have been nice to share with the people trying to help you!
