Just one query for 2d. I suspect the unchecked letter is y giving an antiquated term for dress but can't make any sense of the Yankees and Civil War bit, so probably wrong. Any ideas?

Hi granama1, it's not "y". The first 3 letters are an abbreviation (reversed).

Thanks Mattrom and Ginge. I didn't know the abbreviation and didn't look hard enough at the entry for **g in Chambers. It's there of course!
