Nautical... glad I could help. It's just Uncle that's slang for pawnbroker (people used to say they were going to 'see uncle', less indicative of their poverty!). Yes, I knew 'carbuncle' as a festering sore, and have always found it strange that it has the other meaning, a gem.

Glad you enjoyed and and solved the clue. It was in the Telegraph a few years ago. I hope I remembered it correctly but it seems to work.

Yes I think it works. I would love a clue with 4 consecutive "about"s. I will have a go at it.

The best I can come up with is

Sounds like a bout about about about a duke (5)

Not entirely accurate though.

With regards to 32a Grunger, It does parse.

Spanish article about golf catches on soon (7)

E re L on G

EL (Spanish article) + on (about) + G(olf) = EL ON G

[Then] EL ON G [Catches] (on) 're'

Giving E re L on G

Thanks, Shooty. That's better than my clumsier version earlier!

Thanks. I see what you mean. The "on" being catched(!) is not "on" and the "about" is "on". clever. Nice use of on and about.

I knew you would be right but couldnt see it. Thanks.

Does Jigjags clue parse? Not quite I fear.

Grunger, thanks. I'm relieved that you've got a satisfactory explanation. In this case - as often happens for me - I find the correctness of the answer easier to recognise than to define!
