You'll like the book, Peter - it's extremely useful. I think many, but definitely not all, crosswords still stick to words that are in Chambers. Some newspapers give details - 'Chambers [2016] is the primary reference, though 1 A may be found in Collins', for example. I don't think it's ever been a totally authoritative backstop if you're applying it across The Times, The Telegraph, Guardian.

Hi Malone. I limit myself to just one puzzle per week (The Spectator - though not for much longer if its recent record holds up). I always try to make sure I have the most recent edition of Chambers (2014). In my view it is, head and shoulders, above any others on the market, and I love it as a basic standard. Bitterly, I lament the recent decline in the probity of setters. But that is not all I lament about the modern world.

Thanks, Peter284. I think we've had a few Spectator puzzles with words not in Chambers. It usually surprises me, because Chambers sponsor the prizes! Although I am very fond of Chambers, I make sure my Collins and ODE don't ever feel left out.

I don't have Bradfords (or Brewer's) alwayspuzzled - it took a long internet search before I hit on those two.

Hi drxx. I did my usual trick of NOT going to my Bradford's first and I know what you mean about a long internet search. My first pot of call was the Universal Crossword Solver and that threw up several alternatives for each. As you said in an earlier post the use of an alternative spelling for 15 across doesn't help matters. My favourite Brewers is their Dictionary of Rogues, Villains and Eccentrics. That is an interesting read. It is now time for a glass or three of Pinotage to toast the survival of EV.

3 letters for the (investment) account, 1 for 'current' + A(bout) + 3 for the US state.
