We have D_C_S. "Ducks" seems plausible but i don't see the connection.

Peter and the Wolf?

Did cross our minds but no geese in Peter and the wolf.

The first letter is potentially wrong. The clue for 3ac is “Fauna (8)” For which we have WILDLIFE (providing the D for 5d) which
I don’t really like.

Wolf is an anagram of fowl. Geese and ducks are water fowl???

Thanks, ian, was just in the process of saying that. I suppose the word 'wolf' is an anagram indicator.
That makes me happy with wildlife too.
