Record possibly first released by later engineers (7)

I have E-T-E-E. It's obviously EXTREME, ( or is it?) but I can't parse it.
Any ideas?

Extreme, record, outstanding etc.? Next, later, first released = remove the first letter, N. Add REME, engineers, an Army corps. Ext Reme.

This confused me since next does not appear to be a synonym for later?
They appear related but not the same surely?

If someone can think of a time when they are equivalent I would sleep better!
