57a Car Insurance carried excess (5,4)

Answer is spare tyre. I can see the definition but not the parse. Anyone?

the second def. refers to extra weight - a paunch, for example is sometimes known as a "spare tyre"

I think it's just a double definition. Spare tyre - car insurance, insurance/protection for driving + Spare tyre - carried excess, extra weight, girth etc.
