"we" needs AG to get "wage"

AG is chemical symbol for silver - wage's "silver lining"

Even I approve of this clue - it would have been very easy to have worded it as "What we need...", which would have been syntactically incorrect for the intended wordplay. It shows that a clue doesn't have to be unsound in order to be original and entertaining.

Pan Out, conclude, would work. Pan out, pan is out, you're ready to cook.

That must be it, malone, thanks. I was doing it online so I was sure I'd hit on the right answer as it accepted it, but it may be because I'd run out of tries now I think of it. Surprisingly Chambers doesn't have it and I'd always thought of something panning out as developing, not finishing.

Orson, glad I could help. It's listed in my Chambers (13th ed) - but not with the bold letters of other entries. It has, under 'pan 1' - ( Usually with 'out') , to result... to turn out... to come to an end'.
