13 down - There's mould in his study? Unknown - anyhow, it's gloomy (10).

The answer must be X and an anagram of "it's gloomy".

Grid spaces give ?Y?O?O?I?T. Therefore it should be Xylogomist but there is no such word. The answer could be Xylotomist but this does not tie up with the anagram. Is there an error in the clue?

Kirky - many, many ,many thanks! I was so fixated with the unknown being X that I couldn't see any further.

I feel foolish now!

12a: Fare from India's war-torn province allowing bishop to leave (4)
?m?i (or perhaps ?d?l, as I don't get the homophone at 7d, which seems to be either DECADAL or DECIMAL)

I've seen this answered as IDLI (an Indian dumpling, apparently). The Syrian province of IDLIB without the B for bishop.

chrise: that's probably it, but I still can't see how 7d (Teddy being picked up roughly upsets boy of ten) works for DECADAL .

Decadal = of ten.

De = Ed, Teddy, reversed being(picked up)
Ca = abbreviation for Circa, about
Lad = boy, upset = reverse it, so Dal.

De ca dal.
