It's Don Manley that's stumping me this afternoon.

Island, first to serve stale meals *AIS

I can only think KAIS but how would that parse? This felt more of a Paul McKenna puzzle than a Don Manley.

Ka = to serve (in Chambers, it's longer than that!
I = island
S = first to Serve,

Thanks as ever, Malone, but where does "stale" come into play?

Those components make up the answer, but as Eric Morecambe said of the notes in Grieg's Piano Concerto " not necessarily in the right order"!!

Ken, my post didn't even make sense - I can't have 'serve' used twice!

I can see Ka starting the word=, answer, as the clue says 'first to serve',
I = island
but S, stale , seems …. nonsense!

Hi both, malone your ka as serve is spot-on with stale indicating it's obsolete as given in Chambers but wordplay for island here is "is".

Thanks again, Malone. I'm pretty sure we're right but if the clue is nonsense then it's a rare Don Manley oversight.

Thanks, Ginge - much better! I'm pleased to have added 'ka' to my vocabulary, who knows when it'll come in useful again?
