Re parsing ( while we're here )

As I understand the etiquette, telescopic clues should include a definition, an indication of containment and then the phrase that actually holds the answer. But I keep seeing examples which use extraneous words in the sentence, which I understand is something of a no-no. An example might be " ....Brown erred " featuring ' owner ', but using " James Brown erred " is inserting ' James ' where it serves no purpose. Thoughts ?

Thanks faiton.
I agree, malcolm. I like my clues to have as few words as possible!

Even though I didn't enter this competition, I hope it's OK to say I agree about the extra words. Sometimes you (or me, anyway!) need a short one to improve the surface but "James" is just confusing.
James Brown the songwriter/singer. James the Red Engine????
