Your E is wrong, the 1 A word was new to me.

Thanks Malone. I hadn't actually entered the e on 1 ac. Is 2d a place name?

It's a proper name, but it is in Chambers.

An enjoyable puzzle, as ever.

But did any eyebrows arch over his use of 'Verdi' in 36?

If I'm not mistaken this word means 'green' in some rather obscure languages (Esperanto et al) and in Italian is the plural of 'verde' (green) which as such wouldn't fit in the wordplay.

I suppose I'm asking, as an Azed newbie, whether there's a consensus amongst compilers about fluid use of non-English vocabulary?

Agreed KT17, a nice workout with a few traps to fall into. Azed is usually very consistent with clue structures and the Verdi thing passed me by as, like many schoolboys, we called him Joe Green so I didn't raise an eyebrow. Slightly odd but not too big a liberty given the ease of the clue.

Thank you Granama. I like Joe Green!

Joe Green doesn't have quite the exotic ring to it does it?

Next week should be a good one - Azed 2500 - and he usually pulls all the stops out for significant numbers.

kt17 - this is definitely something of a grey area. Azed (a lexicographer by profession) is scrupulously accurate when it comes to the syntax of his clues, but not having to satisfy a crossword editor means that in other respects he can give himself a certain latitude that might not be afforded to other setters of barred puzzles. He does like to dip into foreign languages, particularly French, and may go a little beyond the standard crossword fare, as in this clue for CRIERS:

News broadcasters en------ were of use to French writers once?

He has, inevitably, clued certain words many times over, and always tries to find a new treatment whenever a word resurfaces. Some of his more inventive efforts would be rejected by many crossword editors; here I think it is possible to argue that 'Such as Verdi' could lead to GREEN, but I suspect that the Listener Crossword editors, for instance, would not be convinced.
