Are "young bloods" referred to that way? Granted, they can be like that.

Fascinating bit of history re Paris, but the clue implies 4 letters removed & those names don't quite fit. Also, an "instrument" is mentioned. The closest I came was "archlute" but that seems to be more Italian.

Or "ustensile". Take away half(?) & anagram, but it has 9 letters.

I agree with your reservations, maybe there is a variant spelling with eight letters - my ans for 3D means both clay and instrument.

Absolutely, but there's still the problem with the Paris connection & the missing half. Strange clue.

The old name for Paris has 7 letters; 'from Paris', i.e. 'Parisian' implies add 'n' than chop off the second half.

3d Chambers gives: Lutetian - adj. Parisian (l.Lutetia Parisiorum, the mud town of the parish, Paris, from lutum, mud)

Oh, but now that I see AJT's post as well, I've finally got it. Actually, ixion @#20 just about nailed it. Perhaps I didn't understand the hints. Duh!
