Cook battling after introduction of off-spinner Root (6)

I guess its ONION (a root) but I can't see why??

I think that perhaps it is 'batting' rather than 'battling', so the first letter of 'off-spinner' ('introduction of off-spinner') precedes a three-letter word meaning 'cook' (in the sense of 'cooking the books') and a two-letter word for 'batting'.
