I thought that some of you might enjoy tackling this puzzle, a tribute which includes several prizewinning clues from the 48 years of Azed clue writing competitions.

Hi jacknatter, very many thanks for posting this. I've only started doing Azed since February but I can recommend this to non-regular "Azeders". No wonder some of these clues were winners; I thought a couple of the &lits were exceptional.

Thanks for that. Very interesting as it took me a while to get in tune with the mix of clue 'flavours'. Some of these were very tricky eg my LOI 18a I haven't the foggiest idea how it parses but there are only two options I can see and one of them is a cheese rather than a worker in rags.
Ditto 17a fine???
24d Haven't a clue how the answer fits apart from the definition.
23a and 28d raised a smile.

granama1 - 18a in the def 'rag' = newspaper (anag 'Take the' + C[inderella]).
Chambers entry for 'log' gives 'fine'/punish as a synonym.
24 - take n[avy] from the usual 3 letters for 'smuggled',and the rest of your answer is a kind of rum.

A lot tougher than an Azed puzzle, I thought (but enjoyable) thanks for posting it.

Thanks Drxx, yes, tougher than the usual. I thought the link between 36, 39 and 10 was very clever. (I think I remember a crossword where this was the main theme). 34d raised a smile to. The only one that I'm still puzzling over now is 31d.

A real labour of love by DRC. I hope the solution on the 10th April tells which was the 1994 clue etc.

Thanks again Drxx, I only looked in Chambers (he's not in) and was fixating on a,d & f rather than just a. Should have googled. (:o)
