it is quite easy avoiding your fellow players as you hack your way to the green. It can be anti social if you play greensomes where you take alternate shots after you both drive. Somebody once described the exercise as playing golf with somebody whose friend ship you did not mind losing .

Same is true of bridge, I believe.
