ChrisE, I took it that the Dee gave 'fourth grade letter' (fourth letter of the modern English alphabet, Chambers).

ChrisE, I too thought it wasn't great - didn't quite make the grade! To me, a D would be both fourth-grade and a letter, Dee could be letter or fourth letter...
