Solution for previous – WSJ 20200222:

https://s.wsj.net/public/resources/documents/PuzAnswer02292020.pdf

-----------------------------------------

As always, for best results download & save the file, then open & print.
(In Preview mode check if the Fit button provides a larger grid)

-----------------------------------------
NB: WSJ has reorganized the puzzle site somewhat.
The solution was usually available a week after the puzzle.
Now it is attached to the following week's puzzle. I'll monitor the situation.

Also there are now buttons for Variety puzzles:
https://blogs.wsj.com/puzzle/category/variety-puzzle/
and cryptics:
https://blogs.wsj.com/puzzle/category/cryptic/
Please note that Cryptics are often tagged as Variety.

If you need a fix, browse the site.

They have daily regular crosswords, now with an interactive one.
Also Variety & Math puzzles on Friday & Saturday.

Yes rosalind. It is a hint to the shaded row.

In most cases only one cell in each row gets 5 letters.

Glazed over in preamble is also a hint.

To start you off, the last cell in row ! has 5 letters.
1a is normal. Mean is a 7 letter word.
6a has 4 letters go in to the last cell.
9d is normal.
