Thanks for the many years of pleasure that you gave to so many of us.

Well said. 27 years in my case.

And so say all of us. The Wee Stinker and the 2 Jumbo Crosswords at Xmas & New Year were briliant.

I can only echo these remarks. His wit and ingenuity will be greatly missed.

I have just read his obituary in the Herald, seems he was a very learned man. In ten years of trying, I only managed to complete the crossword a few times but had fun trying.

40-odd years ago I knew John and his (then) young family, but we moved away and contact was lost - not even a Christmas card (which of course, now it's too late, I regret). I don't think I've ever met someone as blessed with intellectual gifts who wore them so lightly. A truly special man.

Dunno if it's a realistic hope but I've written to the Herald suggesting that a great way to honour John would be to re-issue all his old Stinkers on a weekly basis. I've only seen a fraction of his output. It would be great to get a chance to have a go at all them all.

Wouldn't harm for others to write to the Herald too.

Only just realised that they've published my letter. Still would hurt for more people to ask.
