I have almost a full grid but cannot make any sense of the names of the eponymous character, not the letters which are supposed to give me the location. Any nudge in the right direction would be appreciated.

I originally thought the location would be a place but in fact it's a German opera.

I think the nickname of the character is4,4 and not 5,5 as in the preamble. Is this a misprint or am I just wrong?

Marca, you've been caught. It isn't given as 5,5 - look again. Your 4,4 just needs 'translated', read differently!

It was lovely to see our favourite 6-letter word as an across answer

Grunger, I too thought that!

For those mystified by this - Sorry about the in-joke, it's a reference to earlier Pedants United discussions.

malone - without making me read through 1300-odd messages in the pedants string - which word so delights you?

Cockie, so that I don't simply give an EV answer, which might be unwanted, I'll add it to the PU thread....
