The clue was
"Top note from a stringed instrument"
The solution was HARP
but I cannot find the link between the two???

I think Sharp was the 'note' (musical stuff, opposite of a Flat - I don't know much). Take the S off, 'top' it - and you get Harp, stringed instrument.
