The clue in cryptic in the Globe and Mail on March 7 was “Men and women sometimes granted asylum after Germany lost (6)”. The answer is adults (men and women) but the explanation given is “granted asylum - Germany anag.”. I can’t work it out. Help?

It's an anagram of 'granted asylum' minus 'germany'.

Take the letters of "germany" out of "granted asylum", then anagram the rest.
