Hope this gets through
There seem to be two separate forums.or is it fora?
It is 41A from last week, the clue is :-
The cats whiskers( 5)
We have ?E?AE
The answer seems pretty obvious, but we can't fathom the wordplay

I had doubts about that clue too. It appears to be a simple misdirection rather than an overtly cryptic clue - 'the cat's whiskers' literally means 'the best but the answer here is just another word for 'bristles' (as you've already realised). Not a very good clue, unless I've missed something.
