A Fortiori, a Latin phrase meaning 'with stringer premises'/reasoning. It's AI, excellent, Fort, citadel, Or, in clue+ =I/one. A Fort I or I.

Thanks all for replies.

I had actually worked it out using Malone's reasoning but had never heard the phrase before so wasn't sure about it. Thanks again.

You're welcome, lblack. I've always liked the phrase, it sounds suitably grand! It's appeared in quite a few crosswords over the years.
