I was thinking it might be an anagram of sbestor, which would be "strobes" which is relatable, but this would mean a mistake elsewhere.
Any hints very gratefully received.

Yes, Strobes - anagram of 'best or' + s, seconds.

parapet and strobes...Why?

Sausage, Gnome and Strobes are two fictional characters in Private Eye, they get quite a few mentions. Lord Gnome is the supposed owner, boss, and articles he writes have the byline Strobes.

Parapet was just a rather clunky clue, I think.

Sausage, there's info on Strobes in the entry for Lord Gnome, in the Private Eye stuff on Wiki. Other references are available, that's just the first one I tried!
