bigbad: I too am flummoxed by ginge's clue. Gull is cheat though, so I assumed that this must be the definition. Also, there's a lag screw and a lug bolt. Lag backwards is gal (American bird?), but then "first light" is a mystery. Lug backwards before first light is of course gull, however, but I'm sure I'm way off base. I look forward to enlightenment!

I wondered if "screw" rhymed with "mew" (a gull), though I don't see anything else.

Hi BBM2, aristo & chrise, sorry for any particular consternation.
A bit of a liberty surface wise in terms of evolution/creationism whichever is one's won't as no birds (yet discovered ?) use echo-sounding but a few, like bats, use echo-location (as no doubt a pedant would point out). However, this is crossword land and I believe the wordplay to be ok.
This gull (as aristo correctly surmises is the definition) and with the probing (sounding) of echo before L (first light) might give screech-owl; a bird found in the "Americas".
I'll grab my coat.
