14 across: Wild animal reportedly (4) I have L?N?

I have little doubt that the answer is lynx, but why. The ordering of the clue seems to be incorrect, because lynx is not wild unless it is links, which places the reportedly in the wrong place. A small point, but I would be grateful for any explanation. Thanks in advance. Roger

It joins on to the next clue, which has '...' before the wording (if I remember correctly).

The answer to the other clue was "golf course" which is where "links" came in.
