@ChrisE, to your anecdote: when I worked at Plumpton College the old principal Des Lambert used to tell the story about the very earliest days of the internet (late 80's?) when he brought in a telephone engineer to install a box to allow a computer to connect.

The engineer thoughtfully asked whether he should install a second box "in case this whole internet thing takes off?"
