Thanks, syzygy and Sunray. I found this rather an odd puzzle, but quite enjoyable. I have one not-totally-confirmed answer, but it'll do! There's also a clue, 17 Across, that seems a bit poor.

Thanks syzygy & sunray, groans aplenty. Not 100% sure of what represents 28d but I won't lose sleep over it. Enjoyable as ever, cheers.

Ginge, I was pleased to hear about your experience with 28 D, that's the one I hadn't confirmed, tied up, like the others.

Akhnaten is Philip Glass's insufferable opera, and the clue refers to "I got plenty o' nuttin'" from Porgy and Bess.

I thought you guys might hit a snag with EZ Pass in 33d.

Hi aristo, thanks for confirming; it's the usual problem with homophones I'd pronounce the k hence my uncertainty.
EZ came up in another recent puzzle.

Thanks aristophanes for parsing 33d.

I knew my answer was right. We use I-pass in Illinois.
I had heard of EZ pass but did not know it was used in NY.

I looked up Glass operas and found the answer ,but had no idea about Porgy and Bess.

Lots of groans for the 8 italic clues.

Enjoyed this one.

ginge: I always pronounce the K. This one's a bit of a stretch.
