Amusing that the same solution appears across the bottom of yesterday's Guardian prize crossword (Paul) and down the side of today's Azed. I can't think of two more different setters.

I have completed the grid but fear I've gone wrong somewhere as I have IMPELLANT for 27 and I'm not sure this is a word.

Help!

Hi Kt,
re 27a. The wordplay gives 'impellant' - anagram of 'pitman' around 'ell', but Chambers only has 'impellent'.
'Impellant' seems to only exist as a conjugation of the Latin 'impello'
Rare setter's error?

The intended solution is undoubtedly IMPELLANT, indicated unambiguously by the wordplay. This is a word which really ought to exist (analogous to 'propellant', 'repellant' and 'expellant'), but despite occasional appearances in published works it is not given by Chambers (the reference for Azed) and not explicitly recognised by OED. So an error.

Thank you Mattrom and JackNatter.

I take your point JackNatter and have enquired of Chamber's; it does seem anomalous.

Perhaps it is due to an oversight by Samuel Johnson.
